Title: Adults' foreign-language word and phrase acquisition in noise

Abstract: Adults frequently encounter situations in life when they must learn new words and phrases. These words may be specific to a certain technical field or new slang terms in their native language, or vocabulary items in a second language. While several studies have examined the process of vocabulary acquisition in adults (i.e., Gupta & MacWhinney, 1997; Han, Storkel, Lee, & Cox, 2016; Storkel, Armbrüster, & Hogan, 2006), few studies have taken into account environmental noise and distractors that could influence the encoding of novel words. In this talk, I propose a study that will examine adults’ ability to learn foreign-language words and phrases in an adverse listening environment, and how learning these words and phrases in noise could impact the way that adults later produce them.
