Race, Equity, and Justice. Anti-Racist Futures Speaker Series: You Speak Spanish? Unpacking Racio- and Ethnolinguistic Assumptions in World Language
Dr. Quan will encourage us to reflect on the consequences of not addressing race and race-related matters in the classroom and beyond, especially in light of declining enrollments in language studies. As a possible path forward, she proposes critical language awareness (CLA)—the understanding of how language relates to power (Fairclough, 1992)—as a complementary approach to antiracist pedagogies for reimagining our teaching.
