My current research aim is to provide a more complete understanding of the difficulties second language learners face in processing specific features of Mandarin, and to explore learning/teaching strategies that might help learners overcome these difficulties. Ongoing projects focus on lexical tones, vocabulary size, and, in collaboration with researchers at CASL, the development of various linguistic tests for advanced second language Mandarin speakers. As part of my IGERT rotation, I am currently carrying out an ERP study in collaboration with Ellen Lau and Colin Phillips that aims to measure L1 and L2 responses to various types of pronunciation errors in Chinese, as well as the influence of speaker identity (native or non-native speaker) on listeners? responses to such errors.
