About: 

In general, my research area is phonological processing and representation in different languages. Particularly, I am interested in the influence of orthography on spoken word production. Previous literature has shown that the acquisition of orthographic knowledge may change literate speakers' phonological representation. This influence has been reflected in spoken word processing, which does not require orthographic knowledge. For example, spoken word segmentation among Japanese children developed from being a mixture of syllable- and mora-based to being predominantly mora-based as they learned how to read Kana letters. I am interested to investigate whether this orthographic influence can be represented in spoken word production, a process requires the retrieval of phonological information but does not require orthographic knowledge. In one project, I investigated whether different orthographic cues may lead speakers to choose different phonological unit to plan their speech. In another project, I investigated whether the orthographic features of the native language affects the speech planning unit in a second language. I am also interested in the developmental trajectory of children's speech planning unit and whether their orthographic experience may play a role in it.
