Language Science Lunch Talk: Sarah Phillips (Georgetown)
Time:
Thursday, September 12, 2024 - 12:15 PM to 1:30 PM
Location:
Language Science Center (2130 HJ Patterson Hall)
Using linguistic tools to address biases in clinical language assessments
Abstract: Developing assessments to understand how trauma to an individual’s brain (e.g., stroke) causes certain acquired deficits (e.g., aphasia, aprosodia) is a critical step towards developing interventions for rehabilitation. However, many of these assessments are developed by psychologists or clinicians using White American/European norms. I will present ongoing work as a TL1 Scholar, part of the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science, that utilizes tools and knowledge from linguistics to address assessment bias on a seemingly unrelated task—emotion recognition. My goal for this work is to demonstrate how interdisciplinarity can improve assessments used with underrepresented and underserved communities.
Lunch served at 12:15 PM.
